Wearing nine hospital wrist bands – one for her and each of her newborns – the woman who gave birth to octuplets in the US last month has broken her silence, saying how she longed for a “huge family” to make up for her lonely childhood.
Nadya Suleman, 33, a single mother who already had six children before becoming pregnant with her octuplets, admitted in an interview with NBC that each of her 14 children were born via in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.
Ms Suleman said she had continued to seek fertility treatment to extend her family and make up for being an only child.
"That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family, and - I just longed for certain connections and attachments with another person that I - I really lacked, I believe, growing up," Ms Suleman said in excerpts from the interview, which is set to be aired on Monday.
She said her childhood left her feeling a lack of "self and identity."
"I didn't feel as though, when I was a child, I had much control of my environment. I felt powerless. And that gave me a sense of predictability," Ms Suleman said.
"Reflecting back on my childhood, I know it wasn't functional. It was pretty - pretty dysfunctional, and whose isn't?"
According to public documents released to the Associated Press yesterday, Ms Suleman said she had struggled with depression for many years after becoming injured at a riot in 1999 at the state mental hospital where she worked.

“I went through about seven years of trying, through artificial insemination, through medication,” Nadya Suleman told NBC's Ann Curry. “And all of which was unsuccessful. And then the first IVF procedure from that facility — it was successful. And then I just kept going in.”

Is anybody else completely bothered by this story? This woman is a single mom to 14 kids? She always wanted a huge family she says...we'll I always wanted a Mercedes (old deisel model) but hey my car suites me just fine! Who is this lady and where is the Doctor that artificially inseminated her......again? He needs to get his medical license pulled and move in with Miss Octuplet. Brett thinks he needs to pay child support for the newborn 8 babies until they are all 18. Good idea sweetie! How irresponsible can you be??? Both medical clinic and this Nadya Suleman? I think it's child abuse and neglect. I hope this clinic is shut down pronto. I hope there aren't any more stories like this one soon. I might have to quit the news.
